I tried creating a Buy X get Y coupon type to achieve a 50% discount on specific clearance items if a specific item is in the shopping cart.  I'm not sure what I am missing, this may not be the right thing to do, or not possible?

How did you setup the coupon?

Buy x get y, first found match, value percent (50)

In buy x I put the specific item that granted the discount.

In buy Y I entered the products I wanted to discount.

Do I have to specify all of the possible variants?

I get the message that the include products not in the product list

The buy x get y has a 1 to 1 relationship.,  If you set
    Buy x: 2
    Get y: 1

Then for every 2 products of buy x, 1 product of get y gets discounted.  If you just want 50% discount on any number of clearance products as long as specific products are in the cart, then you would have to set it up differently.  In this case, a combination coupon.

Coupon A: normal coupon where you add the "buy x" products and set value to 0
Coupon B: normal coupon where you add the clearance products and set value to 50%
coupon c: combination coupon where you add coupons a and b and set process type to "Only if all apply"
