How to display discount/coupon

I have created BuyX/GetY coupons, but they are not displaying in the cart or checkout process. This is a critical element in any promotion - the customer needs to see that the incentive has been applied. How can I get the coupon to show in the cart and checkout section?

Is this a Virtuemart system? If so you would need to enable coupons in Virtuemart to see the discount line.

admin->virtuemart->configuration->shop front tab, and check the box enable coupon usage.
