Free Upgrade for Product (Buy X, Get Y, Delete X)

I'm trying to figure out a way to offer an upgrade to a product.

For example, customer adds product X to their cart and uses the coupon code UPGRADE. Then, product Y is automatically added to the cart, but product X is then deleted.
Any thoughts on how to make this work?

Hello,

Are you saying the buy x product is being deleted from the cart by the coupon? This should not happen. Can you post an image of how you setup your coupon?

Not at all. I'm saying this is the functionality I need.

Otherwise, I don't know how to make the following idea work
CUstomer adds a product to cart, applies coupon code, product is graded to a better version.

Hello,

That cannot be done with a coupon. If you setup, for example, a buy xy coupon, which will add product y to the cart, on deleting product x, the coupon becomes invalid.

I think you will need to extend awocoupon with some custom coding to get this working.
