Ok, just tested this, and this is the setup that worked for me. It gives sponsor and friend points on the friend's first order:

Friend:

Register membership type(s) with Awoaffiliates, Aworewards and Awotracker using points/future rewards xxx currency

In the file www/plugins/vmpayment/eway/eway.php, on line 130, I changed:

That seems to have fixed the issue.
